Our story

RECinMED was born from a simple but powerful idea: the energy transition must be driven not only by technology and policy, but by the people who live and shape Mediterranean territories every day.

Across the region, communities face the combined challenges of climate change, rising energy costs and dependence on external fossil fuels. Despite the vast renewable potential of the Mediterranean, many local areas still struggle to access inclusive, affordable and sustainable energy systems. RECinMED responds by placing citizens at the core of this transformation through the development of Renewable Energy Communities.

The project believes that sustainable change emerges when local knowledge, social participation and cross-border cooperation come together. By fostering collaboration among territories with shared challenges but diverse realities, RECinMED promotes a collective approach to designing future-ready energy models rooted in resilience, fairness and social inclusion.

Rather than imposing a single solution, RECinMED supports territories in co-creating pathways that reflect their specific needs, capacities and cultural contexts. From urban neighbourhoods to rural landscapes and island communities, the project embraces the Mediterranean’s diversity as a strength.

RECinMED tells a story of cooperation, empowerment and transformation — a story in which communities become protagonists of their own sustainable energy future.

RECinMED is led by School Center Velenje (Slovenia) and implemented in collaboration with a transnational consortium including the University of Bologna and ASSO (Italy), ENERGIES 2050 (France), the Granada City Council (Spain), AREANATejo (Portugal), Argonauta and RERA (Croatia), the Municipality of Smolyan (Bulgaria), Neapolis University Pafos (Cyprus) and the City of Derventa (Bosnia and Herzegovina), ensuring a holistic and cooperative approach to Mediterranean energy transition.
